Elie Wiesel: The Man and His Legacy

Keynote speaker: Professor Steven T Katz will present a lecture on “Elie Wiesel: The Man and His Legacy”.

This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Elie Wiesel and will begin with a summary of the main features of his remarkable life. It will then discuss the key issues raised by his enormous and highly influential list of publications, and will conclude with more personal reminiscences of his political activity that brought him into contact with many intellectual, spiritual and political figures in America, Western Europe and Israel, and gained him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

Steven T. Katz holds the Slater Chair in Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Boston University, and is Academic Advisor to the 31 country International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

A prolific author, Katz has published numerous prize-winning works and essays on the Holocaust, Jewish philosophy, and comparative mysticism. He is currently working on a comparison between the Holocaust and black slavery, to be published next year by Cambridge University Press.

Professor Katz is in Australia as Mandelbaum House Scholar in Residence.

This lecture is presented by the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.
