The MHM Film Club will be screening “Sighet, Sighet”, (1967) 27 min. Directed by Harold Becker

Guest Speaker:Sue Hampel OAM

Elie Wiesel, a survivor from Sighet [aka Sighetu Marmatiei], a town from which thousands of Jews were deported to the extermination camp Auschwitz, returns, unknown and unseen, a silent witness to the town where he was born and grew up.

When Elie Wiesel was born in 1928 the town belonged to Romania, after 1940 then to Hungary, but now it’s again a Romanian town. Life goes on in Sighet, the same buildings are still there but for Wiesel this normalcy is a lie; for the inhabitants he knew have vanished before their time and he realizes that he cannot ‘return’.

The aim of the MHM Film Club is to view and discuss films about the Holocaust, other genocides and human rights issues. Monthly film screenings are followed by guest speakers and informal discussion.
