A more recent project has been taking in a young Iranian asylum seeker named Ali who she met in early 2013. Debra and Ali forged a strong friendship and soon after they met, Ali moved in with Debra’s family, changed his name to Alex and converted to Judaism. Their meeting has been life changing for both of them.
MHM Social Club guest speaker, Debra Korman, Kehilat Nitzan will give a public lecture on “How an asylum seeker came to be living in my home”.
Debra is involved in a variety of community projects. She helps organise a weekly food van with 80 volunteers from her synagogue Kehilat Nitzan and in conjunction with the Father Bob Maguire Foundation, they feed and offer support and friendship to the disadvantaged in Port Melbourne.
