“Following Shira’s Journey” (2014) 50mins
Directed by Carol Gordon and Natalie Cunningham
More than 60,000 Greek Jews perished in the Nazi concentration camps, and yet the experiences of Greece’s Jewish population during the Holocaust remain relatively unknown. In the aftermath of the Second World War, fear, suspicion and Civil War relegated the Greek Jews’ tragic history to a time that many seemed all too ready to forget.
“Following Shira’s Journey” features interviews with Greek Jewish Holocaust survivors, second and third generation survivors as well as community members who are fighting to keep their traditions and culture alive, this groundbreaking documentary explores the history of the once thriving Jewish communities of Greece and the small modern-day communities which are determined that the tragedies of the past never be forgotten.
The screening will be followed by a Q and A session and the opportunity to view an exhibition of photographs taken by Emmanuel Santos.
The book of the screenplay ‘Shira’s Journey’ will be on sale afterwards (cost of the book is $40 or $41 on credit card) and Carol will be available to do book signings.
