Special Screening: “The Danish Solution” (2003) Denmark/USA

Special Screening of “The Danish Solution: The Rescue of the Jews in Denmark” (2003), Denmark/USA.

Directed by Karen Cantor and Camilla Kjaerilff and Narrated by Garrison Keillor. Guest Speaker: Karen Cantor

The Danish Solution is about humanity in action. This evocative documentary film tells the story of the rescue of Danish Jews during WWII.  When ordinary Danes heard that the Jews would be rounded up, many offered help. Person after person did what they could to hide their Jewish neighbors.  Especially today, with a tidal wave of refugees risking their lives to find safety, The Danish Solution documents how individual action changed the course of history and asks each one of us what we would do to help others in peril.

Narrated by Garrison Keillor, this film documents the heroic actions of community members who acted out of a belief in doing the right thing. Over 95 percent of the Danish Jewish community, numbering about 3000 souls, escaped genocide and survived the Holocaust largely because of the life saving actions of many Danes in 1943. The tale has many threads, some spun into legend. The Danish Solution unravels the inspiring true story – a tale that is more compelling than the myths!
