'Facing the Past'

FACING THE PAST – A photographic exhibition of Holocaust survivors by Simon Shiff

To mark its 30th year, the Melbourne Holocaust Museum is paying tribute to all the Holocaust survivors who have volunteered their time to make the Centre the vibrant, award-winning museum and educational institution it has become.

Facing the Past – the work of photographer Simon Shiff – is an exhibition of black and white photographic portraits of Holocaust survivors who are still active at the Holocaust Centre, 75 years since the start of the Second World War and since their lives changed irrevocably. Also included are brief personal histories and photographs of the survivors in their youth.

These precious eyewitnesses – the heart and soul of the Centre – attend the Centre every week, some sharing their personal histories with visitors, others working in the archives or library, in the hope that their stories will leave a lasting impression.

The Centre’s maxim, ‘remember the past, change the future’, resonates through their stories and through these portraits.

This exhibition honours their quiet dignity and resilience in the face of tragic memories.

The exhibition will be mounted at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum, 13-15 Selwyn Street, Elsternwick, from 7th December 2014 to 1st February 2015.
