The Space Between – Where Understanding Begins, is a professionally facilitated immersive workplace experience created by the Melbourne Holocaust Museum with support from the Victorian Government and Monash University.

Designed to spark meaningful conversations, challenge assumptions, and inspire real change, The Space Between features a series of pre-filmed storytelling videos of six Australian Jews, which serve as a springboard for a workplace program, facilitated by MHM staff, involving brave discussions to foster social cohesion and foster feelings of empathy, understanding, humanity and a belief in fellow humans. The program is designed to create space for reflection and dialogue on the choices individuals and institutions make, particularly in complex and challenging times.

Aimed at senior leadership, and workplaces looking to make space for dialogue and connection beyond compliance, The Space Between is a program committed to achieving long-term outcomes in addressing antisemitism and hate speech in Victoria. With the project’s focus on building critical thinking skills, enhancing character strengths, and collective responsibility, we lay the groundwork for sustained change and solutions that will bring about a more socially cohesive landscape.

Brave Enough – Small Acts Take Big Courage

Brave Enough is a short animation and discussion guide designed for Australian classrooms, helping teenagers reflect on social pressure, self-expression and the courage it takes to be yourself. This classroom resource focusses on enhancing social cohesion and is designed be used by secondary school teachers in the classroom. The resource centres around a thought provoking, accessible, youth-focused animated video that looks at belonging, connection and acceptance of difference – what it means and why it matters.

The focus of this resource for to create something different that teenage school students can reflect on and learn from, something that is memorable and meaningful. Brave Enough comes with an accompanying discussion pack for teachers, to guide inclusive, reflective conversations with students, about speaking up, inclusion and being brave enough to act.

This resource is designed to open up conversations through the lens of antisemitism and is designed for use in classes such as wellbeing, pastoral and homeroom. Brave Enough will be distributed through multiple platforms, including ABC Education’s learning platform.

With Gratitude

Both of these projects are funded through Critical Thinking is Critical: Educate, Innovate, Advocate Against Antisemitism, a three year project funded through the Multicultural Affairs portfolio of the Victorian Government.

In addition, the MHM has received academic advice from Monash University to ensure both these programs are driven by contemporary data around the most effective narrative approaches to create the conditions for open, curious conversation and how best to drive attitudinal change.

At its essence, Critical Thinking is Critical is a hearts and minds project. Its design is around cultivating feelings of hope, warmth and connection. As with everything we do at MHM, it’s also designed to be innovative and sustainable with a focus on learning, listening and dialogue.

The Melbourne Holocaust Museum acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government.
