Landsmanshaft in Melbourne

The landsmanshaftn were societies of Jewish immigrants who came from the same European village.

Named for the members’ original birthplaces, these groups were formed to assist their fellow ‘townspeople’ in settling into their new lives in Australia.

This assistance – material, emotional, cultural and social – helped many new arrivals acclimatise to life in their new country.

Today, landsmanshaftn still provide community connection – along with opportunities to remember and memorialise victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
