L’Chaim: The Exceptional Life of Chaim Sztajer

About this book
Chaim’s story begins in pre-war Czestochowa, Poland where poverty and antisemitism were an everyday struggle surpassed only by the strength and love of Chaim’s tight knit religious family. Chaim reveals the horrific experiences of a world destroyed by the Holocaust and the unimaginable terrors of the Treblinka death camp. He continues his story beyond World War II, as he rebuilds his life: first in Israel, and then Australia. L’Chaim: the exceptional life of Chaim Sztajer is a testament of not only survival in the face of unspeakable horror and adversity, but a life able to start again and thrive.

Malka Zylbersztajn published a memoir of her father’s life, L’Chaim: The Exceptional Life of Chaim Sztajer in 2018. In the same year she also donated a collection of photographs and documents from the pre- and post-war periods. This donation substantially enhances the documentation of Chaim’s life, and his rare status as one of only 67 people known to have survived the Treblinka uprising in August 1943. Chaim was a sonderkommando at the death camp for over 11 months, and his model of the camp is one of the central features of the JHC museum.
