This year, we again join in partnership with the Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF) to provide audiences with meaningful connections to selected cinematic Holocaust representations.
Raising Holocaust Awareness in Partnership with the Jewish International Film Festival
From stories of unlikely friendships, strange true life events to the heroes of history, JIFF (23 Feb – 3 April) makes its sparkling return to Australian cinemas, showcasing the very best of Jewish cinematic gems from around the globe.
We are excited to collaborate with JIFF in fostering a supportive viewing environment by linking our Melbourne-based survivors stories and factual information related to the festival’s Holocaust films.
Join our Head of Education Dr Simon Holloway as he opens The Conference on 3 March at Classic Cinemas in Elsternwick, Victoria. The Conference (2022)
On the morning of 20 January 1942, in a villa on the lakefront of the Wannsee in Berlin, leading members of the Nazi regime came together. They had been invited by Reinhard Heydrich to a meeting followed by breakfast: the sole topic on the agenda that morning was what the Nazis called the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, the organisation of the systematic mass murder of millions of Jews across Europe. Shot on location at Wannsee Lake in Berlin and produced for the 80 year commemoration of the Conference, this historically accurate and haunting drama brings to life the minutiae of the fateful gathering. Truus' Children (2020)
Before and during WWII, the little-known Dutch war hero Truus Wijsmuller saved the lives of thousands of Jewish children. She was a woman so convinced of her mission that she flew to Vienna to negotiate a deal with Adolf Eichmann to let 10,000 mostly Jewish children leave their birth countries and flee to England and the Netherlands. Featuring interviews with the surviving children, alongside an original recording of Truus Wijsmuller, Truus’ Children is a moving documentary that pays tribute to the bravery of a single extraordinary woman. I am Here (2021)
A spirited South African Holocaust survivor reveals her astonishing life journey. Born in 1921 Warsaw, Ella Blumenthal grew up with a large family and a love for swimming. WWII changed everything: from the Warsaw Ghetto uprising to Bergen-Belsen, Ella and her niece, Roma, bore witness to the unthinkable, persevering only with hope and faith. Today Ella lives in Cape Town, greeting each day with optimism and even compassion for those who would deny her past. Ella’s memories, shared for the first time, are illustrated through evocative hand-drawn animation. The Meaning of Hitler (2020)
The Meaning of Hitler is a timely and provocative interrogation of our culture’s fascination with Hitler and Nazism. Filmed in nine countries over three years, the film traces Hitler’s movements, his rise to power and the scenes of his crimes as historians and writers, including Deborah Lipstadt, Martin Amis, Yehuda Bauer, and famed Nazi hunters Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, weigh in on the lasting impact of his virulent ideology. As fears of fascism now abound, the film explores the myths and misconceptions of our understanding of the past, and the difficult process of coming to terms with it at a time in our history when it seems more urgent than ever.
